1. Statement
Ashbourne is committed to supporting the needs and professional development of all members of staff so they can perform to the best of their ability and find fulfilment in their role. Given that Ashbourne offers educational provision on its premises staff are, for the most part, required to work onsite. However, the College is prepared to offer some flexibility on the number of hours expected.
2. Flexible onsite hours
The working day at Ashbourne is from 9am to 6pm. Yearly Teachers are expected to be on site during these hours on their specified working days. However, Yearly Teacher may be permitted to leave after 4pm on a certain number of days based on the following:
3. Expected hours onsite
In order to ensure there is always a sufficient number of staff members onsite, Yearly Teacher will only be able to leave after 4pm on specified days. This will ensure that we can cover classes due to illness. The days where the Yearly Teacher is expected to be onsite until 6pm will be scheduled with reference to their individual timetables. In cases where the staff member does not teach at that time, they are expected to be onsite and accessible to carry out other duties such as meeting students to help them improve, chasing prep and covering classes.
4. Late start requests
We recognise that some staff may prefer to start later and finish later. We would therefore consider requests of this nature on a case-by-case basis. For example, a Yearly Teacher may request to start later, e.g. 11 am, and leave after 6 pm (rather than after 4pm). Such requests should be sent to the Timetable Team.
5. Open Evenings and Parents’ Evenings
Yearly Teachers are expected to be onsite for Open Evenings and Parents’ Evenings irrespective of whether they usually return home after 4pm or not on those days.
6. Request preferred days
Yearly Teachers can request which days they would prefer to leave after 4pm. However, these requests are subject to timetabling constraints so may not always be possible. Requests should be sent to the Timetable Team by 30th June.
7. Timetable changes
As the timetable changes at different points during the academic year, Yearly Teachers must expect that the days they are required to stay onsite after 4pm may have to change.
8. Staff flexibility
Due to timetable constraints, there may be occasions where Yearly Teachers may have to stay onsite after 4 pm on more occasions than agreed. Whilst the College will try to avoid this, staff are asked to be understanding and flexible. In these cases, there will be no additional compensation.
9. Fixed leaving times
Once agreed, Yearly Teachers days to leave after 4pm are fixed. It is not possible to swap agreed days. For example, you cannot swap one 4-6 slot for one week to a different 4-6 slot for the next. This will also include weeks with Parents’ Evenings and Open Evenings.
10. Key consideration with non-teaching hours
Most importantly, we expect teachers to use their non-teaching time to ensure that all students complete all assignments (e.g. homework/coursework) to the best of their ability and on time, and to offer additional support to students where appropriate to boost academic performance. The flexibility in working hours onsite must not negatively impact teachers’ capacity or commitment to support students and to ensure they meet basic expectations in terms of work completion.
Requests should be emailed to the Timetabling Team by 30th June:
